The BioGenetic Law and Leadership Communication

Commonly stated as ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny, the biogenetic law theorizes that the stages an animal embryo undergoes during development are a chronological replay of that species’ past evolutionary forms. According to the law, by studying the stages of embryological development, one is, in effect, studying the history and diversification of life on Earth. Pretty cool!

This phenomenon is also true in communication.

Did you know that the structure of a person’s sentences represents their most pervasive habits of thinking and feeling, and how they make choices? By studying a person’s communication patterns we are, in effect, studying how they live their life. Pretty cool!

This is one of the main reasons we use the Process Communication Model® at Next Element, and why we are a US distributor of the model. PCM is a model of individual differences based around how people communicate. Unlike most other models of individual differences, PCM was developed from the observation of behavior. Here are some of the main principles of PCM.

  1. How we say something is often more important than what we say.
  2. Personality can be identified and measured by observing communication behavior.
  3. Healthy communication, and unhealthy miscommunication are observable, sequential, and reversible.

When people learn PCM, they gain tremendous insights into their own preferences, and what makes them tick. They use what they know about their personality to become better stewards of their own energy and rise to greater potential. They also learn how to decode behavior by observing distinct patterns in how people communicate. They learn to use this information to adapt their communication for greater connection, influence, and trust. They learn strategies for turning around miscommunication and unhealthy conflict.

This might be why over 96% of people who have completed PCM training with us say that this model is “superior” or “far superior” to anything else they have experienced. Check out data from a recent European study on PCM impact.

Whether you are a leader, a parent, a pastor, a therapist, a coach, a consultant, a teacher, or a salesperson, imagine how cool it would be if you could apply the biogenetic law to your own communication.
