Never underestimate the power of inhibitions. How many times in your life have you been told “Don’t,” “You shouldn’t,” or “You can’t?” Did it start early in your life with a parent, caregiver, teacher, or coach? Do you remember how you felt? Did you internalize these messages? How much have those limitations inhibited you throughout your life?
I’m genuinely sorry this happened to you. It’s unfortunate that people who cared about you and wanted to protect you said these things. This is tragic.
Because you were meant to thrive. And fly. And make a ruckus.
Permissions are the antidote to inhibitions. Here are three permissions that can free you from damaging inhibitions and help you realize your potential.
It’s OK to say what you want
Are you afraid to share your real desires, passions, and feelings? You are just as worthy as everyone else. You have wants, needs, and passions that matter, whether or not they’ve been affirmed in the past. It’s OK to verbalize what you want, ask for it, and advocate for yourself. This isn’t about entitlement or expecting to get whatever you want. It’s about finding and expressing your voice. Let’s take continuing education for example. It’s OK to let go and move on
Are you trapped in the vortex of perfection? Do you feel like the exact explanation or plan is just out of reach? Do you need just a little more data or reassurance to make a decision? The good news is that you are not only capable of thinking clearly and making a choice; you are also capable of grieving the loss of the option not chosen. That’s part of life. You can’t have it all and it’s OK to feel sad about that. Feel it, let it go, and embrace the reality that excellence is attainable, but perfection is an illusion.
It’s OK to stop and listen
Are you driven by your commitment to making good on your promises? Like the police department, you protect and serve all day, every day. You care so much. And that’s really hard work. This hard work of caring takes a toll. It’s OK to take a break once in a while to listen to your body, your soul, your psyche, and your people. The body speaks its mind. It is a wise voice and it will only get louder if you don’t listen.
You weren’t meant to be limited by inhibitions. Will you accept these permissions and begin to realize your potential for making a bigger difference?
