“Now I don’t know but I been told
It’s hard to run with the weight of gold
Other hand I have heard it said
It’s just as hard with the weight of lead.”

-Grateful Dead, New Speedway Boogie

How many tools are in your tool belt?

Why did you get them in the first place?

What problem were you trying to solve at the time?

How well do you use them today?

How many are gathering dust? Why?

Most people and organizations who become overburdened by tools have followed this path;

  • Experience suffering
  • Go looking for something to soothe the pain (or it comes looking for you)
  • Buy the tool and expect it to reduce the suffering
  • Get disillusioned, overwhelmed, or just plain tired
  • Get used to the pain again
  • Get tired of the pain and go looking for another tool.

The most important realization I had as a therapist was that people didn’t come to me because they wanted to change. They came because they wanted the pain to go away.

You can spend your time and money on the one who promises to make the pain go away, or you can spend it on those who offer a path for change and transformation. They both sell tools, the difference is in how they are used and what you have to show for it down the road.

Tools don’t work. You do.
